The Book

For several years I worked on a book, Stirring the Deep. As I enquired, what now Lord? God told me, “Rachel, people don’t need another book. They need THE book, the Bible. Lead them to read my Words, the words of life.” Now that may seem disheartening, but it actually wasn’t but exciting.

We’ve all been encouraged and inspired by the words of others. It’s a sweet fellowship to connect to another through their words. But now more than ever, God desires us to come to Him in a very intimate way, not through middle men and women (leaders, pastors, writers, etc). God is calling us to abide in a rich deep union with Him, one-on-one. He is revealing Himself to those who are seeking Him with all their heart, soul and mind in powerful and personal ways. It’s an extraordinary time. It’s time to remove all that hinders and dive in deep into Him.

Books, like teachers and pastors, can often impede the development of our intimacy with God when we lean on them when we should be dependent on God. Books can be encouraging and enlightening. God uses others in our lives in many ways. However, we can easily depend on them when we should be depending on God. That is what happened to me.

Years ago, the majority of books on my bookshelves were self-improvement, Christian and non-Christian. I wanted deliverance, healing and to be the woman I envisioned. I figured the knowledge in those books would take me as they seemed to promise. Reading them was exhilarating, uplifting, and motivating, but it was more of an emotional high then anything substantial happening in me. After I had been reading the Bible for a couple of years, the spirit prompted me to get rid of all those books. For the next couple of years, they were expunged from my life. I didn’t read one. At the time, I didn’t fully know the reasons why or the impact it would have, but I knew it had to do something with learning to abide and trust in God’s Word first and foremost, which it absolutely did and more.

During that time of solitary focus, I developed a solid foundation with God and on His Word. It became my source of truth. It opened me up to a powerful communion between me and God. It imploded truth into my life. As the years passed of abiding in His Word getting to know God, the deliverance I sought (often in those books) started to come. I wasn’t abiding in God’s Word to be healed, but that is exactly what happened. I wanted to get to know, draw close to Him. But the healing came and it wasn’t just the healing, but abiding in His Word started to affect EVERYTHING in my life. That difference fueled my passion in writing a book about it. I wanted to share what I discovered with others.

Removing those books from my life revealed my dependency on them. I realized how much I was seeking deliverance from those human writers. I believed reading their words was a sufficient replacement for reading the Word. I thought truth was truth. But reading God’s Word isn’t just about gathering knowledge it’s about cultivating a relationship, a relationship with God. In that relationship your life truly changes; not because of your efforts but because of His presence and promises at work in your life. Nothing can replace that dynamic.

At first it was hard (though I knew those books weren’t “working”), because those books were easier to read and more straight forward. And I was so use to thinking that is what you do. But they are the words of man. Though they may have been expressing God’s truth, they weren’t God’s words. They lacked the power of what dwelling in His pure Word trusting His Spirit to teach you imparts.

A couple years later, I picked up my first Christian book. I couldn’t believe the contrast! It had good content that back in the day I would have been reveling in. The writer spoke truths of God that He had taught me early that year. It was incredible. But what stood out to me is how the author’s words paled in comparison to what I received from the Word – which was powerful beyond my expectations. To fully understand the difference, you have to experience it. The gap between abiding in God’s Word verses someone else’s is enormous. Why would we settle for human words when we have His?

It’s easy to become dependent on others, whether authors, preachers, teachers, and/or leaders, when we should be on God. But this dependency makes them into an idol. And often we don’t realize our dependency until they are removed from our lives. If we don’t have a dependency, then we can live without them and God is more than enough.

Putting away those books was one of the best actions I took for my relationship with God. Previously, it was like I in a marriage with my husband and everyone else and often spending much more time with everyone else. When it is just you and God, the intimacy gained is astounding. This is why abiding in the Word of God alone during your quiet time is so critical. Give sole attention to God, and read those other books at another time. Give Him all of your attention, the attention He deserves. You may feel you get more from the other books so that you need them, but that is because you truly haven’t experienced a deep intimacy with God that is far greater. Allow time for that intimacy to develop. It isn’t instant. Though it may be tough at first because you are use to those other voices, if you can stick with it – it will reap tremendous benefits. Then when you do read another’s book, it’s a sweet fellowship, not dependency.

I’ve been reading, So You Don’t Want to Go to Church Anymore by Wayne Jacobsen and Dave Coleman. It’s a good book. It resonates with much of what God has taught me over the past couple of years. I enjoy the way the writers state aspects of God’s truth. But reading the truths these two men have learned doesn’t replace me learning those truths from God. When we learn from Him, He changes us and it becomes our truth. We don’t want to exchange the intimacy we could be gaining with God by being reliant on others’ experiences of God – it’s a grave loss.

As for my book, it was a tremendous time of healing, renewal, learning and growing. God used my writing to focus my mind on the truths He was teaching me in His Word. It laid the foundation for what I do today and probably will do in the future. It laid the foundation for passion I have in helping others cultivate a real relationship with God. I wouldn’t change those years spent writing for anything.

My passion isn’t for people to read my book, but to read God’s book for it’s a fountain of life. And not to read it like a text book, but to dive into its pages as you would spend time with a loved one to cultivate a deep relationship. I’ve learned the difference between man’s words verses God’s Word – I want you to have the very best and to abide in His for there is where the power lies.

We only obtain a relationship with God if we start talking and listening to Him ourselves; not from reading about another’s journey with God but living our own.

Psalm 138:2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

  1. I have been saying this for years and so has my best friend, yet everyone looked at us, and still do, like we are crazy! I read God’s word for 9 years of theology in private school. I never saw a relation between his word I was reading and what others were teaching. I wondered why there was no “true church”. I learned through the bits of feelings God has given me and the feelings my friend has had, that there isn’t one! The temple Christ and his father referred to are our body and souls he gave us. Those are our connection to God. These vessels he created have direct communication and relation to their creator. We just have to be willing to listen. For me I am still learning to trust him fully. I feel if I am not worthy and he leaves me completely I will be devastated. I know it is weird an irrational, but it is what it is. I know many others feel the same. I am learning though, step by step. I hope others do to. I thank God every day that I am no longer ashamed of who I am. I got a new tattoo around my old gang one. It says, “What I have done is who I am, but what I have done is not who I will be.” My wish is that all will understand that who they are or were has no bearing on how much God loves them. God loves all his children. All. I found my way back to who I am through him and when others shed all traditions and beliefs and start fresh with just his word. They will too. Praise God.

    • Hi Bradley – sounds like you are on an incredible journey . . and yes we are the church, our spirits united in spirit and truth.

It can be a hard lesson to learn in the way that God loves us because it is a love so far beyond anything we experience from another human. We are constantly putting limits where God doesn’t. It is an incredible journey to learning and experiencing that love.

  2. 🙂 It’s exciting to see how God has led you even in what you read to bring you closer to Him. I was able to identify so much with what you described with being too dependent on books and getting motivation and encouragement from them that was really only an emotional high. It’s true that we can so easily become dependent on these things.

After quitting grad school, I believe in many ways, I simply replaced my school work with other reading and writing. Though I had many reasons for quitting (long story), I’ve been amazed since then at how I see that was really God’s change in my plans, not my own. I may or may not have been doing it for good reasons, but I see now so many of His reasons for moving me away from the path I was on. The problem has been in many ways when God leads me away from something or prompts me to let go and stop doing something that I fall into replacing it with something else that is still not God Himself or His Word or what He is leading me to do with my time! Books and other things have been some of those distractions; He is leading me now not just to stop certain things but to replace them with Himself alone. It’s challenging and beautiful… And it’s something that your writing has often confirmed for me.

This is what I have found so special about blogging; so often truths that are repeated to me this way ARE in fact CONFIRMING something God has already been teaching during my prayer and Scripture reading times with Him! And, another layer of this, as you mention, is the fellowship. It is beautiful to learn directly from God’s Word and His Spirit while simply sharing our journey with our brothers and sisters through writing.

    • Hi Ruth – love to hear your thoughts – always insightful – you made some great points and loved your last one – so well said “It is beautiful to learn directly from God’s Word and His Spirit while simply sharing our journey with our brothers and sisters through writing.” Much agreed

  3. Hello Rachel
This is a powerful truth you’ve shared here, and it is so very important that we stay in his word,as you said that way we learn directly from God.It’s such a wonderful experience being in a close relationship with God,and just hanging onto his words, and we need that now more than ever.I truly enjoyed the read!! 😀
    Love you

    • Hi Pat – it is a tremendous truth – His Word holds so much power that others’ don’t and it’s the way to deepening our relationship with God when it is read with faith and a heart to really know Him. Thanks so much for your comment. I truly appreciate hearing your thoughts. 🙂

  4. This is an interesting thought. I was thinking earlier about whether it is profitable to think about and review others relationship with God as it relates to historical figures of the past and their books and writings.

Yet I recalled this important fact. The entire of modern Christianity and those sweet words that you endorse are what else, but the books, letters and writings of others experiences with God. Now before you protest, it is understood that the Word of God is not to be compared with the word of man, but yet if the man writing the words has had a true experience with God then like a testimony given in the worship services of the Lord can inspire and uplift the hearts of anyone similarly seeking God’s blessings or going through similar circumstances.

The Word of God enjoins us to exhort the brethren daily… Hebrews 3:13 and further says so much the more as ye see the day approaching. Well most of us would agree that the day is approaching rapidly and we need more exhortation lest any of us be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. Paul also instructs us not to forsake to assemble ourselves together and speaks on the church as being the body of Christ and we all being members of one another.

I know you have read all that and know all that being a lover of the Word of God, but I want to stir up your pure mind by way of remembrance.

    • Called Soliders – I truly appreciate your thoughts on this – and agree about exhorting and encouraging one another. It can be incredibly inspiring to read of others – However, I think what can happen is that others start filling the role that God and His Word is to have in our lives – it’s about which one is truly our foundation – are we followers of men of God or of God . . . truly? There is a big difference. I see a co-dependency increasing in the Christian culture, like I use to have, on spiritual leaders when it should be God. Does that make sense? We aren’t to take the place of God in others’ lives but to lead and help foster each other’s relationship with God. We can anything, even if it’s good, and make it an idol because it takes the place that God should be holding in our lives.

      • God said, I will give you Pastors after my own heart.
Do you agree that what God set up in His Word is right? That the church, which is the body of Christ, which is the city set on a hill that cannot be hid?

Because it could be that those worship places and spiritual leaders that the people are following as you speak of are just false, plain and simple, but we don’t throw out a system because the people aren’t doing right, we rather reprove or remove the people or find some people who are doing it the right way. Who have a personal relationship with God and are worshiping God yet do not forsake to assemble themselves together as the Word of God enjoins.

There in lies the Will of God as dictated by the Word of God. To worship and glorify Him, where two or three are gathered together worshiping Him in spirit and in truth.

      • Called Soliders – thanks for sharing your thoughts . . . I believe there was a time for the system – but like the system of the Tabneracle that God set up and yet removed – I think the same will happen with the church system. And then there will be a New Jersualem. I feel the end is upon us and that transformation is happening. Humans are corrupt and we’ve made the system our idol among other things . . we’ve made it into something it was never intended – you read this throughout the books of the prophets. The Word says that many false prophets and angels of light and ministers of light will come in the end – and where are the ministers mostly but in the church system. The Word talks about the enemy taking over the sanctuary. It talks about the corruption of the system. It talks about how there are many pastors that He didn’t call and how they have lead the people astray. It talks about how people won’t believe that could happen to His church — all of which I see happening today.

Jeremiah 5:31 The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule by their own power; And My people love to have it so. But what will you do in the end?

Lamentations 2:5-7 “The Lord was as an enemy: he hath swallowed up Israel, he hath swallowed up all her palaces: he hath destroyed his strong holds, and hath increased in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation. And he hath violently taken away his tabernacle, as if it were of a garden: he hath destroyed his places of the assembly: the LORD hath caused the solemn feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion, and hath despised in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest. The Lord hath cast off his altar, he hath abhorred his sanctuary, he hath given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces; they have made a noise in the house of the LORD, as in the day of a solemn feast.

Lamentations 4:12 The kings of the earth, and all the inhabitants of the world, would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy should have entered into the gates of Jerusalem.

I think there is a change happening among us as God foretells in His Word . . . some believe that the words of the prophets of the OT doesn’t relate to us, but I believe it is very revelant. It is written layer upon layer. I agree about not forsaking coming together . . in fact I did a video on it. But coming together doesn’t have to be in the “system” – as you said it it were 2 or 3 are gathered together.

        https://stirringthedeep.com/2009/10/10/foundation-for-young-believers/

Those who are truly born of God and come to Him in Spirit and truth are the true Church. It isn’t about a system, it’s about His Spirit in the body of believers – this is the true church – and those of this body of Christ long to be with one another in true fellowship.

I hope this clarifies my thoughts a bit on this – there is a very meaty subject.

  5. What you have typed is true in what you said, but the old prophets have more to say than that.

When Israel, symbolizing the people of God or the church, was cast out of sight, they weren’t altogether forsaken. They were scattered, they were bound, but there were those like Daniel who didn’t compromise, who didn’t bow, who didn’t burn.

Jesus has said, other sheep I have which are not of this fold, them must I bring also and there shall be one fold and one shepherd. – John 10:16

Jesus also said, He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. – Matthew 12:30

What am I saying? You said well, the people of God all want to be together and there are those who are together, standing for all the truth of God’s word, not following after a form of Godliness, but gathering ad worshiping in Spirit and truth, the members having their own personal relationship with God and following God’s will for their lives on an individual basis.

Perhaps you don’t believe it, but I want you to come see for yourself. Yes, it’s quite a challenge, but I believe you have a zeal and love for God, so I am bold enough to invite you to fellowship with Saints from all over the world who love God and follow the One True Shepherd which is Jesus Christ.

The event is the Annual Fellowship Meeting in Columbus, Georgia (address if you want to Google it is 3205 Cusseta Road, zip 31903).

    • Called Soldiers – I appreciate your thoughts and the invite – I’ll check it out . . .

When I speak of the system – I speak of it as a whole not individuals – as the Word appears to. I think God is calling people to come to Him in truth and Spirit and not a call to a church system, but to Him. It is an incredible time of coming to Him in truth and in His Word. True believers are the true Church, who are all over – that is the real church and the one I focus on – not the system created by man. When you are united to God then it unites you to others who are of Him – and that fellowship can happen anywhere and it does.

  6. Hi Rachel
I to have come to a place as you yourself have.
I was part of a very strong controlling church, not understanding/discerning what I was sitting under. I am not sure how it started but I began to search out the scriptures with the books that they had written giving there interpretation on what the scriptures where saying. I came to a conclusion something was not right and left.
After leaving this church I actually read a number of christian books things like basic christianity, how to be a christian refocusing myself back to the simplicity of a christian walk. As I started this journey my reading became greater and greater and bit by bit I found myself reading less and less of these books.
Reading what I call pure unadulterated word of God, I actually went out and bought a new bible (mine all had concordances in them) not saying there is anything wrong with concordances. I just wanted the basic text so got an ESV reference bible.
Now I read in the morning Spirit, bible and me, I would encourage anyone to try it, it is truly amazing and as Rachel expressed until you experience it you do not understand, you don’t even know you are missing something. I myself have been a christian for many years and could not read more than a few minutes without being distracted, now I can read until my eyes won’t focus anymore. What he has shown me is more than I could ever express. (I have truly found HIM) No one can teach you like he can, as his truths unfolds before you you just marvel, bit by bit he fills in what I think of as one large jigsaw puzzle that he slowly reveals to you. You will read in say where I was reading in Exodus the other day and suddenly something you are reading there adds to something you read in Revelations and Corinthians
Although I have been a christain for many many years, I have not been on this kind of journey all that long, what he has shown me in the last 8 to 10 mths is so much more than the many years that went before.
I would like to add I was reading Isaiah to Malachi for nearly 5mths (and I mean hours spent with him) the first few times reading through I got glimpses of something, but as I persisted, what he has shown me if you could read my thoughts would be (Wow Wow Wow & Wow) truly awesome. Now I understand honey to my mouth bitter to my stomach (that is what it truly is) honey for what I have found what joy what peace, what freedom I have found. Bitter to my stomach when I see with my spiritual eyes what Isaiah to Malachi is truly saying.(and much of the bible in fact)
God’s promise to us is for those who truly seek Him will find Him when we seek him with all of our heart.

This is already getting to long but I’ll just add I have written some songs over the years,I realise now he has been trying to reach me for a very long time one of my songs has a line in it.
“Seek him while yet there is time” (little did I know they were for Me I thought they where for the unsaved)

    • Hi Leanne, I’m so glad that you shared your story … more people need to hear more stories as yours as the deception and lies are so thick. It truly brought joy to my heart to read what you have found .. may God continue to manifest Himself to you in every possible way.

      • Hi Rachel
That should read commentaries/study notes not concordances

Actually I am loving Esword on the computer

I read in one of your bloggs sometime ago (not sure if I remember correctly but I think it was a discusion about bibles falling apart & wanting margins to write on the sides) I have invested in a bible from Allan’s Bindings I have the Highland Goatskin and I just love it. They are expensive, but I feel worth it. Some of the versions can be bought with margins for your notes.

      • Hi Leanne – good distinction … concordances are very helpful. And wide-margin Bibles are a must in my book. What better investment? Thanks for your comment.
